Allegiant Global Increases Focus on Landfill Avoidance Goals for Alcoa-Davenport Works
Indianapolis, IN – June 23, 2008 Allegiant Global announces extensive focus on landfill avoidance and zero-landfill progress for Alcoa Davenport Works. Over the past 2 1/2 years, Allegiant Global has diligently found reuse opportunities and improvements for several by-products generated at Alcoa Davenport Works facility located in Bettendorf, Iowa. The by-product management solutions obtained by Allegiant Global are directly in line with Alcoa’s commitment to reach zero waste landfill status by 2015.
Various waste types have been converted into beneficial reusable products. Alcoa Davenport Works’ original contract agreement included landfill avoidance goals of 20% over a 3-year period. The facility results were judged from June 2005, and since then Alcoa Davenport Works has diverted 46% (4,965 tons) of by-products in 2006 and 56% (12,962.48 tons) in 2007. So far this year, Alcoa Davenport Works has reused 2,376.51 tons of by-products.
“Allegiant Global Services has done a very good job of finding beneficial reuse of many waste streams while reducing costs significantly,” said Wayne Jochmann, Environmental Manager of Alcoa Davenport Works. Cost savings were expected from the partnership with Allegiant Global of 10% over the 3-year period. The costs saving goals were greatly exceeded: in 2006 it was 19.42%, in 2007 it was 7.90% and year-to-date through April is 8.76%. Alcoa Davenport Works was able to secure more eco-friendly ways of disposing of “hard to do” materials like refractory brick that is now mostly going for re-use at a paving company. Allegiant Global and Alcoa also secured a contract with Iowa’s only Waste to Energy facility, BFC Gas and Electric, to use oily filter paper and wood floor block as alternate fuel resulting in an additional 15-20% diversion from landfill or 1,000 tons per year. Allegiant Global has greatly enhanced Alcoa’s recycling efforts far beyond the original contract goals.
Some of Alcoa Davenport Works most recent successes have been in waste minimization, the implementation of a solvent re-use program that has eliminated thirty 55-gallon drums each year of Hazardous Waste, as well as an installation of an aerosol can processing machine that will automatically puncture, crush, then contain the liquids and vapors of aerosol cans at a rate of 400 per hour. The aerosol can unit will eliminate more than one hundred 55-gallon drums of hazardous aerosol waste each year. Aerosol cans were Alcoa Davenport Works largest hazardous waste stream but now are a commodity that is 100% recycled. It is very clear that the Alcoa Davenport Works facility has made great progress towards zero landfill. The partnership between Alcoa and Allegiant Global is a true commitment to finding the best solutions in by-product management.
Troy Tumey, Alcoa’s onsite Program Manager said, “At Allegiant Global, we are able to turn goals into reality, whether the goal is cost savings or zero landfill. It is truly a pleasure to work with a company like Alcoa, which holds the environment in such high regards, and I’m honored they hold the same values as we do."
